Malaysia to benefit from enhanced internet connection

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is poised to benefit immensely from the full potentials of the digital economy by enhancing the speed of Internet connection.
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Wireless Communication Centre (WCC) Director, Professor Dr Tharek Abd Rahman, said the demand for larger wireless spectrum to support mobile broadband systems with higher capacity was projected to increase in the next few years as Malaysians were progressively relying on mobile services connectivity.
"To meet the demand for high data traffic in mobile networks, providers need more spectrum to maintain the quality of services that customers have come to expect and rely on," he said.
He said this to reporters at the Huawei Media Roundtable here today.
A White Paper on existing mobile broadband (MBB) performance was also released at the roundtable.
The UTM study, which was conducted in various localities Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sabah, and Sarawak, revealed that there was a serious need for enhancing 4G network capabilities in the rural areas.
The study, headed by Tharek, showed that Malaysia required an addition of 307 megahertz (MHz) spectrum to satisfy MBB traffic forecast by 2020.
Of this, the study showed that only 130 MHz could be achieved.
The White Paper recommended additional policies such as allocating more spectrum for MBB services, including integrating wireless and fixed broadband to form part of a national broadband structure. — Bernama
