IPOH: After teaming up with China to keep the country's automotive industry on a strong footing, Malaysia is now looking to tap India's expertise, said Second International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan.
"This is the latest venture, as for now Proton is on the right track and now we have to go further.
"We are looking at India's largest multinational automotive manufacturer Tata Group which acquired English premier car manufacturer Jaguar and Landrover.
"The purchase of the world's well-known manufacturers will definitely contribute to the country's automative industry.
"We want them set up a plant in Malaysia (Tanjung Malim). Our idea is to create an automative hub," he told reporters at his Chinese New Year Open House here today.
"With a population of 1.3 billion, India has vast potential. I will talk to the automative players to kick-start discussions after the Chinese New Year celebrations.
"I might also visit the manufacturers, this is my Chinese New Year agenda, we have to offer the foreign investors attractive incentives to convince them to come to Malaysia," he added.
According to Ong, the matter had been discussed with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir who have expressed support for the idea.
"We will offer the industrial park next to Proton City for them to set up the plant," he added.
