KUALA LUMPUR: A Kuala Lumpur-bound Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight from Melbourne was forced to turn back yesterday due to a disruptive passenger.
In a statement, the airline said Flight MH128 departed from Melbourne at 11.11pm local time and was expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur at 5.28am (Malaysian time) today, but returned to Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport 30 minutes later.
The airport was forced into a lockdown after the plane made an emergency landing.
"The flight turned back after the captain was alerted by a cabin crew of a passenger who had attempted to enter the cockpit.
"Malaysia Airlines would like to stress that at no point was the aircraft hijacked."
The passenger was reportedly overpowered and detained by about a dozen other passengers, some of whom claimed the man had said that he was in possession of a bomb.
The man was later arrested by airport security personnel and Malaysia Airlines will be investigating the incident with Australian authorities.
"MH128 safely landed at 11.41pm (9.41pm Malaysian time). The aircraft is currently on a remote bay and waiting for security assistance to arrive at the aircraft," the statement said.
Passengers were screened upon disembarkation and put up at hotels, and will be offered seats on alternative flights.
"Safety and security are of Malaysia Airlines' utmost priority. The airline wishes to apologise for the inconvenience caused.
Live air traffic tracker service, @Flightradar24, also tweeted about the incident: "Because of the security incident on flight #MH128 flights bound for Melbourne Airport are now diverting to other airports."
