MHF: Training recovery for the mentally-ill

IPOH: About 100 mentally-ill patients in the country have and are undergoing training provided by the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) in Ampang, Selangor.
Its chairman Tan Sri Hashim Meon said the skills-training, such as culinary, sewing and baking, were provided since 2010 to help mental patients earn their own living.
"Some of the patients who underwent training at MHF have been able to find jobs, and some setting up their own business," he told reporters during a visit to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta (HBUK) here today.
Meanwhile, HBUK director Dr Norhayati Nordin said about 40 patients at the hospital who wnet for the training were now able to earn their own living.
The feedback we received from their employers is that they work better and are more hardworking than normal people, she said.
Mental illness is the second highest ailment after heart-related diseases, with around 4.2 million (30%) of Malaysians from the age of 16 and above having mental health problems. — Bernama
