MARAN: Inspired by his mother's love for honey, Jengka 11 Felda youth Mohd Hurmadi Maamor, ventured into the kelulut (stingless bee) honey business.
"My mother loves eating honey, I always wanted to buy for her, but the price of kelulut honey is quite high.
"So, I learned how to breed kelulut from a Chinese entrepreneur in Jerantut and bought four beehives which I reared in my front yard," he said.
Now, 27-year-old Mohd Hurmadi is able to sell 200 bottles of kelulut honey each month and has also expanded his business to manufacturing kelulut honey-based soap and cultivating fig.
Mohd Hurmadi is among second-generation Felda youths who strive to improve their socio-economic status after the first generation of settlers secured the opportunity to join Felda in the effort to help transform the lives of poverty-stricken Malays.
Mohd Hurmadi said he had never thought of leaving Felda and of income problems if he continued to stay at the settlement.
"Living in the city is costly … Felda has vast lands that promise numerous income opportunities to those who work hard. Thus, we should not let the land go to waste, we should work on it until it produces results," he said.
Mohd Hurmadi is now in the process of applying for Felda's aid to fund the expansion of his business.
"Only after receiving the aid will I start thinking about how to market my products, gain certification from certain agencies and open a shop. All of this requires money," he added. – Bernama
