PETALING JAYA: More public facilities and places of worship are set to be made accessible via the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) once Phase Two of the rail system goes underway.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, in a Facebook posting today, hailed the country's latest rail project as a "holistic network".
In an accompanying picture, he stated that the MRT will connect users to a total 22 places of worship, 19 schools, and eight healthcare centres.
"A holistic network connection. Sekolah Menengah Bandar Utama, Kuala Lumpur Baptist Church, Kajang Specialist Hospital and many other schools, places of worship as well as healthcare centres will be made more accessible through MRT Malaysia #JomNaikMRT," he said.
Najib is set to launch the second phase of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line between Semantan and Kajang on July 17.
Phase Two will cover 19 stations, including seven underground one, namely Muzium Negara (KL Sentral), Pasar Seni, Plaza Merdeka, Bukit Bintang, Tun Razak Exchange, Jalan Cochrane and Taman Maluri.
Phase One of the SBK Line, meanwhile, started its operation on Dec 16 last year, covering 12 stations from Sungai Buloh to Semantan, spanning 21km.
The RM23 billion MRT SBK project, which spans 51km with a total 31 stations, is part of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) projects initiated by Najib, and approved by the government in December 2010.
It will serve as a corridor with a population of 1.2 million people linking their homes with their destinations in the city.
Work for MRT's second line, the Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) Line, is currently underway, and is slated for completion in 2022, while the third line is still on the drawing board.
