KUALA LUMPUR: The fight against terror will be among the main priorities of new Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun (pix).
Mohamed Fuzi was today appointed the 11th chief of the Royal Malaysia Police replacing outgoing IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
In acknowledging the need to address the threat of terrorism, he said 343 personnel will be admitted into the Special Branch's counter-terrorism unit to beef up the war against militancy in the country.
"My top priority is to fight crime in the country. I will do my best to deliver the expectations of the government and the public," he said.
Mohamad Fuzi expressed surprise when the announcement of his appointment was made at a handover of duties ceremony at the Police Training Centre, Jalan Semarak here today.
The event was witnessed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
"It was definitely unexpected. But I have to carry out the trust given to me by the government," he said.
Mohamad Fuzi's appointment as IGP also left many in the force surprised as by tradition, the post usually goes to the serving deputy IGP.
Born in Parit, Perak on May 4, 1959, Mohamad Fuzi served mostly in the Special Branch throughout his service and was in the social intelligence, political intelligence and secretariat of the department.
In 2007 he was deputy director II of the Special Branch and two years later the director of the counter-terrorism division before being promoted as Director of Administration.
He was briefly appointed as deputy IGP in 2014 following the retirement of then No.2 Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin.
In 2015, he returned to the Special Branch as its director before rising as IGP today.
Mohamad Fuzi's previous position as Special Branch director is taken over by former Narcotics Crime Investigations Department director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff.
