KUALA LUMPUR: There is no solid evidence connecting businessman Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, to any decision or business deals made by 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), according to Federal police investigations.
In saying this, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said investigations so far had revealed Low had never worked for or was employed in 1MDB and that every decision and business transaction had been made by its management or board of directors.
"Police initiated investigations against 1MDB based on the Public Accounts Committee report tabled in Parliament on April 7, 2016.
"However, if any new statement or any form of evidence emerges against Low, we will not hesitate to take the necessary action against him according to the existing laws," he said in a statement today.
Mohamad Fuzi further pointed out that the action of United States Department of Justice (DoJ) of seizing the luxury yacht Equanimity, which allegedly belongs to Low, in Indonesia was a civil action based on a court case in America.
"The case was against Low and not 1MDB.
"We (Malaysian police) have not received any information either from our Indonesian counterparts or the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) regarding the seizure of Equanimity on Feb 28.
"So far, we have not been informed or contacted by any party to assist in any investigation into the yacht too," he stressed.
A police team to probe 1MDB was formed on April 8, 2016 and it initiated investigations under Section 409 of the Penal Code and Section 420 of the same code to see if there was any element of breach of trust or fraud.
