THE World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that one in every six deaths is due to cancer but no matter how impactful it is, this should not lead us to believe that we are losing to cancer.
Deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye (pix) said years before, people only talked about chemotherapy and radiotherapy in cancer treatment but now Malaysia has ventured into the use of various other modalities of therapy in line with the international standards of treatment to the local patients
Dr Lee also said the Health Ministry supported provisions of cancer treatment, diagnostic methods and screening tools.
"These include establishing several national Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) surrounding the topic of cancer and implementing preventive measures such as mammogram, self-breast examination programmes and smoking cessation initiatives," he said in his speech during the Presidential Dinner of 52nd Malaysia-Singapore Congress of Medicine (MSCM) and Jade Ribbon Gala Event, here last night.
The MSCM event, with the theme of 'Battling Cancer - What is Your Role?', is a collaboration by three organisations – the Academy of Medicine Malaysia, the College of Physicians and the Malaysian Oncological Society. — Bernama
