Over 30,000 expected to attend Penang's state-level Chap Goh Meh celebrations

GEORGE TOWN: A performance by the internationally renowned Jiuzhaigou Tibetan Dance Group will be one of the key attractions during this year's state-level Chap Goh Meh celebration.
Penang State EXCO for Tourism Development Danny Law Heng Kiang said it is the state government's honour to invite the Tibetans here and it will be exciting to be able to witness Jiuzhaigou's performances during the celebration.

The event on March 2 will be held from 7pm to 10.30pm along the Esplanade.
Chap Goh Meh, the Chinese version of Valentine Day's will also feature the throwing of mandarin oranges by fair maidens to bachelors across the Penang Channel.
Law commented that this year's programme is really special because the organisers also invited schools to perform.
He said the schools that will be performing are Phor Tay Primary School, Han Chiang High School, Chung Ling Private High School, Phor Tay High School and SMK Heng Ee.
"Over 20,000 people attended the celebration last year and if the weather holds up, we expect over 30,000 people this year," he said.
He added that the state government is grateful that this year's fireworks display is once again sponsored by the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
Grab Malaysia representative Daphne Lim said in order to counter traffic congestion, Grab is working together with the state government to offer a special 'CHAPGOHMEH' promo code for the event.
"The public can use the promo code which is worth RM5 off for rides to and from Esplanade valid on March 2 from 5pm till 12am," she said.
Road closure on that day will be in effect between 4pm and 12am for Jalan Tun Syed Barakbah and from 6am onwards for Jalan Padang Kota Lama.
