SITIAWAN: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, today opened the Lumut Malaysia Fisheries College in Kampung Acheh that has been renamed the Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Fisheries College, Lumut.
He was accompanied to the event by his consort, the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim.
Also accompanying the sultan were the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa; the Raja Puan Besar of Perak, Raja Nor Mahani Raja Shahar Shah; and the Raja Di-Hilir of Perak, Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Sultan Idris Shah.
Also present were Minister of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek; Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir; State Secretary Datuk Seri Abdul Puhat Mat Nayan; state executive councillors and senior government officers.
Ahmad Shabery, in his speech, said the college was set up to inspire a modernisation and transformation of the fisheries industry through training modules and the development of skilled manpower.

He said the college could accommodate 500 trainees at a time and would produce 2,000 graduates by 2020.
The college could help resolve the problems of a lack of local skilled manpower and the dependence on foreign labour, he said.
Among others, he said, the college would provide training opportunities in the field of aquaculture, fish and prawn breeding, marine engineering as well as the processing of fisheries products.
The college was set up in April last year and had its first intake of students on July 1 last year, offering two courses, Capture Fisheries Technology and Marine Aquaculture.
Developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry at a cost of RM69.8 million, the college is located on 4.8ha.
It is under the supervision of the National Agricultural Training Council which comes under purview of the ministry, and offers education completely sponsored by the government. — Bernama
