KUALA LUMPUR: Police believe they busted a counterfeit note syndicate with the arrest of three people, including a Thai woman on Tuesday.
Wangsa Maju district police chief Supt. Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said the suspects aged between 30 and 45 years were arrested at a budget hotel in Pudu after they were found producing fake RM100 notes.
On Monday, he added, a parking attendant at the Metro Pudu complex had received a RM100 note, believed to be fake, from a man staying in the hotel.
Based on the information received from the parking attendant, he said, the police swung into action on Tuesday and arrested the suspect and his girlfriend after they were found with three fake RM100 notes.
"We also picked up another suspect who is believed to be the syndicate's mastermind who had 29 pieces of similar fake notes," said Roy.
Preliminary checks showed that the first male suspect served as an intermediary between the mastermind and the buyers.
Following interrogation, he said, the police raided the mastermind's house in Taman Shamelin in Cheras, and seized equipments used to process the fake notes.
The case is being investigated under Section 489D of the Penal Code for making or possessing instruments or materials for forging or counterfeiting currency notes or bank notes.
Upon conviction, the suspects will be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 20 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.
