Police foil attempt to smuggle 2.65 kg of cocaine to Australia

KUALA LUMPUR: A 23-year-old man has been detained after he was believed to be trying to send 2.65kg of cocaine through a courier service company to Australia on Tuesday.
The suspect was picked up by Bukit Aman Narcotics CID and Cheras Special Tactics and Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) in two separate raids in the Klang Valley.
According to Bukit Aman Narcotics CID deputy director, Datuk Kamarulzaman Mamat said the suspect was believed to be an intermediary and possessed information on the international drug trafficking syndicate with Malaysia as a transit point.
According to him, initial investigation found the suspect who is unemployed was involved in international drug trafficking for the first time and did not have past criminal records.
"Following the arrest of the suspect in a house in Puchong, police raided the godown of a courier service company in Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Kuala Lumpur and succeeded in recovering 2.65 kg of cocaine.
"Upon inspection, police found the drugs hidden inside a car absorber which would be sent to Australia," he said in a media conference at Cheras police headquarters here today.
Kamarulzaman said the value of seizure was estimated at RM529,000 and it was believed each kilogramme of the drug seized is worth RM200,000 at the local market price.
According to him, the suspect would be remanded for seven days until May 29 to assist the investigation.
The case was being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. — Bernama
