SANGLANG: The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail today urged the federal government to reopen the Free Flow Zone at the Wang Kelian Immigration Post, Padang Besar near here to help generate the local economy.
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said Wang Kelian was previously a popular tourist destination especially during weekends, whereby residents living near the area used to carry out various business activity to supplement their family income.
"In the past, over 50 buses came to Wang Kelian but today Wang Kelian has become a ghost town, so I urge the federal government to give a new look to Wang Kelian," he said at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Sanglang Integrated Jetty project in Kuala Sanglang here, today.
He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak had also been informed about the matter during his working visit to Perlis recently.
The Free Flow Zone facilitates free movement at the border without any documentation up to approximately 1km between Wang Kelian, here, and Wang Prachan in Thailand.
However, it was shut down on April 1, 2015, for security reasons. — Bernama
