KUALA LUMPUR: A teacher was sentenced to a three-month jail term and fined RM6,000 by the magistrates court after he was found guilty of molesting his five-year-old student, five years ago.
Magistrate Zuhair Rosli sentenced Mohd Redzuan Zakarian, 33, who taught the victim religious studies, after he was found guilty at the conclusion of the trial.
The court also ordered Mohd Redzuan to serve an additional six-month jail term if he fails to pay the fine.
However his defence counsel applied for a stay pending an appeal to the High Court.
The magistrate granted the stay and increased the bail of RM4,000 to RM8,000, with one surety.
Based on the facts of the case, Mohd Redzuan, who has a three-year old child, molested the victim in the living room of his home at Sungai Besi on Feb 9, 2017 between 8pm to 9pm.
He was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of 10 years, or a fine, or whipping, or any two of the stipulated penalties, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Najwa Bistamam appeared for the prosecution.
