GEORGE TOWN: A Uber driver was beaten up by the public after allegedly outraging the modesty of a Vietnamese woman in Paya Terubong on Tuesday.
Northeast district police chief ACP Anuar Omar said the driver was roughed up by 10 individuals consisting of the foreign woman's husband and a few passers-by.
He said the woman had earlier taken the ride-sharing service from Lintang Paya Terubong to Jalan Agryll about 3.56pm.
He said a report was lodged by the woman saying the driver suddenly unzipped his pants and flashed out his private part.
He added the suspect also tried to pull the woman's hand over to his private part but the latter quickly got out from the vehicle so as to protect herself.
She then rushed for assistance before the driver was apprehended.
Anuar said the man sustained injuries to his head, hands and leg and has been sent to Penang Hospital for treatment.
"His vehicle was also badly damaged," Anuar added in a statement.
An eyewitness theSun spoke to said she was shocked after seeing the car's windscreen was smashed from her apartment unit nearby.
"I saw many people surrounding the driver," the 28-year-old woman who declined be named said.
Police have since classified the case for assault or use of criminal force to a person with intent to outrage modesty under the Penal Code.
