SHAH ALAM: A Kuala Lumpur SEA Games bus driver was sent straight to Kajang Prison to serve six months' jail after he failed to pay a fine of RM20,400 meted out by the Magistrate's Court here, today.
Magistrate P. Sarulatha meted out the sentence against R. Krishnan, 34, the bus driver for the national hockey contingent, after he pleaded guilty to 19 charges of traffic-related offences committed around the city between 2005 and 2016, including driving without a valid licence.
Each charge under Section 20, Section 26 (1) and Section 56 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 provides for a fine of between RM200 to RM2,000 upon conviction.
Earlier, Krishnan, who was unrepresented, appealed to the court to impose a lighter sentence, saying he was the sole breadwinner for his family.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurulhuda Ramli, however, requested the court to hand out a deterrent sentence.
"The accused is a bus driver for KL2017, and has a fake licence. Such drivers can have a negative impact on the country, other road users and themselves," she said. — Bernama
