Tabling of four bills postponed to next Dewan Rakyat meeting

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has postponed the tabling of four bills, including the Employment Insurance System Bill 2017(EIS) to the next Dewan Rakyat meeting.
The other three bills are Malaysian Aviation Commission (Amendment) Bill 2017, Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (Amendment) Bill 2017 and Stamp (Amendment) Bill 2017.
The house was informed of the postponement by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed when the house resumed sitting this morning.
The postponement means that Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang (Marang -PAS) Private Member's Bill on the amendments of Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 355 (RUU 355) has been moved up to number six of the order paper.
Today is the last day of the second meeting of the Dewan Rakyat for this year.
The House will meet again on 23 Oct to 30 Nov 2017.
Abdul Hadi, who is also the PAS president first tabled the RUU355 May last year, seeking to grant the Syariah Court powers to impose stiffer penalties on all crimes except those with the death sentence.
It was then deferred to the next meeting in November last year, when Abdul Hadi read out an amended version of his bill, where its tabling and debate was once again deferred.
The motion to amend the RUU355 was finally tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in this year’s first Dewan Rakyat meeting in April following several postponements.
Meanwhile, The EIS was first tabled last week and it aims to create an insurance scheme for laid-off workers and addresses the issue of re-employability after their job loss.
However, the bill received negative reception from various organisations, citing that the required contribution under the bill is not proportionate to the amount offered to retrenched workers.
