Tyre factory owner gets jail, fine for bribery

JOHOR BARU: A retread tyre factory owner was sentenced to one day in jail and fined RM14,000, in default six months jail, by the sessions court here for bribing an enforcement assistant last year.
Law Boon Ching, 43, admitted before Judge Jailani Rahmat to offering a RM300 bribe to the enforcement assistant, who is attached with Kluang Municipal Council (MPK), as an inducement to refrain from taking action against his factory for operating without a valid license and on agricultural land.
The father of two committed the offence at Lot 392, Jalan Batu Pahat, Kluang at about 11.20am on Nov 29 last year.
The charge, under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act, is punishable under Section 24 of the same act, provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of RM10,000 or five times the bribe amount or whichever is higher upon conviction.
Meanwhile, another man, Lim Kim Chui, 60, pleaded not guilty to offering a RM500 bribe to another MPK enforcement assistant on Sept 13 last year.
The waiter was charged with committing the offence at No 1, Jalan Majupadu 1, Taman Majupadu, Kluang as an inducement to cancel two compound fines issued to his wife Chun Nyuk Kiow, 54, who is the owner of the restaurant, for placing chairs and tables on the road in front of the premises.
The court set bail at RM10,000 in one surety and fixed April 16 for mention.
