KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno Welfare Bureau (Bikum) is targeting to visit more than 60,000 houses at 60 locations nationwide until year-end via its 'Umno Helps the People 2.0' tour which starts today.
Its chairman, Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said the programme was in line with Umno's objective which emphasised the welfare and interests of the people, as well as to boost the party's image.
"The programme is targeted at the poor people, single mothers, students and the needy in urban and rural areas, regardless of their race.
"This time around the approach is a bit different as it focuses on the grassroots and covers activities planned by Bikum at the central level with state leaders, including Youth, Wanita and Puteri which will focus more on house to house visits at selected areas," he told a press conference on the programme here today.
The programme is a continuation of Phase One of the 'Umno Helps the People' which was launched last May and benefitted about 300,000 people in 21 areas nationwide.

Shamsul Anuar said among the activities to be implemented under the second edition of the programme were opening of 20,000 National Education Savings Scheme accounts for Standard One pupils and providing free treatment by the Bikum Medical Team who would visit houses of those suffering from chronic diseases.
"In addition, there will be free motorcycle clinic for youths, wiring checks and maintenance; as well as repair and decorate houses to be visited under the programmes," he said.
Shamsul Anuar said Bikum would visit six locations in Pahang, namely Bentong, Paya Besar, Temerloh, Bera, Pekan and Cameron Highlands beginning today until Sunday, before going to other states.
The programme, a collaboration between various parties including the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), Giat Mara and the Health Ministry, involved an allocation of more than RM150,000 for each location, he added. — Bernama
