Water theft at project site, over RM200,000 in losses: SPAN

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) today detected a water theft case at an apartment project construction site in Jalan Rasa Sayang, Cheras, here, involving losses amounting to about RM221,482 since January, last year.
SPAN's Corporate Communications and Consumer Affairs Unit director, Hisyam Samad said following this, an enforcement operation was conducted at the construction site at 10am today, involving 10 enforcement officers after SPAN received a complaint from Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas).
"In that operation, SPAN found a poly pipe connection of 32mm (in diameter) from the Syabas main pipe to channel water supply to the construction workers' makeshift quarters for their daily use," he said when contacted by Bernama, here, today.
Following this, he added, SPAN issued a notice to seal and seize the illegal water connection devices at the site, while Syabas issued a notice for compensation for the water loss.
Earlier, in a statement today, SPAN said checks revealed the premises having two water supply accounts registered under different names.
The first account is still active while the second account was terminated on Jan 18, last year. A chlorine test done at the site also confirmed that the supply received was of treated water, it said.
The case of illegal water supply connection is being investigated under Section 123(1) of the Water Services Industry Act 2006, which provides for a fine of not exceeding RM100,000 or a jail term of up to one year, or both.
