TELUK INTAN: Barisan Nasional (BN) has a long-term plan to tackle the flood woes faced by rural residents here, said Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong.
The Teluk Intan parliamentary candidate said a holistic study and long-term plan to solve the flooding, especially in Changkat Jong, is in the works.
"While waiting for the plan to be put in place, all the drainage and sewerage system in the residential and rural areas will also be upgraded to ensure smooth water flow during heavy downpour," Mah said during his eight-point manifesto launch for Teluk Intan at the Gerakan service centre today.
Mah added that the phase two and three of the ongoing flood mitigation plan will also be kick-started soon to complement the recently completed phase one.
In the manifesto, Mah also mentioned that the security and safety aspect for the Teluk Intan community will be further enhanced where there will be more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed at high-risk crime-prone areas.
"Currently, there are already some 20 CCTVs being installed at some of the main locations around Teluk Intan and these locations are selected by the police.
"Furthermore, the roles of local safety personnel like the police, Rela, and Teluk Intan Volunteer Security Force (PKSTI) will also be enhanced where their existing numbers at the local neighbourhood will be increased and expanded," Mah said.
The manifesto also focuses on developing the tourism industry in Teluk Intan.
"For starters, we will continue to push for the Menara Condong, one of the iconic tourist attractions here, to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
"Additionally, we will also beautify Sungai Perak by having stone steps built along the river bank for tourism purposes so that it will become like the Bund of Shanghai ," Mah said.
Under the manifesto, primary and secondary school goers in Teluk Intan will receive free tuition classes.
"At the same time, the ongoing assistance of free school uniforms to all primary school children and food vouchers for underprivileged school children will also be continued," he said.
