JAINJ officers found man hiding under table during early morning khalwat raid at Kluang hotel on November 30
A couple planning to marry within weeks was detained by Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) enforcement officers during an early morning operation at a Kluang hotel.
The raid occurred around 1.30 on November 30 (Sunday), when officers knocked on the hotel room door for approximately five minutes before the woman opened it, initially claiming she was alone in the room.
Both individuals, who are in their 20s, were arrested for allegedly committing khalwat—a Syariah offence involving unmarried Muslims of opposite genders in close proximity within a private setting.
After entering the hotel room and switching on the lights, JAINJ officers discovered the man concealed under a table in the corner. The hotel room had been registered under the woman’s name, who had traveled from another state.
According to JAINJ’s statement, the couple rationalised their decision to stay together by explaining this would be their final meeting before the wedding, which was scheduled to take place in Kluang approximately one month later.
The department’s Facebook post noted the couple had engaged in what they termed a “test drive” of their relationship despite it not yet being halal through marriage. Officers also described finding the bedroom in a disheveled condition.
The woman had made the interstate journey specifically to meet her future in-laws ahead of the wedding ceremony.
Both individuals face potential charges under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997, which addresses close proximity offences.
Convicted offenders may receive fines up to RM3,000, imprisonment for a maximum of two years, or both penalties combined, depending on judicial determination.
JAINJ has intensified khalwat enforcement activities across Johor throughout 2024, conducting systematic operations at hotels, homestays, and rental properties throughout the state.
Recent high-profile cases include the detention of married colleagues who took simultaneous leave to meet at a Kluang hotel, multiple couples arrested during overnight raids at the same hotel facility, and even a case where a married man was discovered hiding in ceiling space during a residential raid.
The department has publicly emphasised its commitment to conducting enforcement regardless of venue prestige, explicitly stating that luxury condominiums and premium hotels receive identical scrutiny as budget accommodations.
In October, JAINJ officers arrested two Singaporeans—a married man and a widowed woman—at a Johor Bahru condominium following two months of intelligence gathering on short-term rental units suspected of facilitating meetings between unmarried couples.
The department regularly uses social media platforms to document enforcement activities and issue warnings, often concluding posts with religious reminders about mortality and accountability.
