Ex-minister Mokhtar Hashim dies

PETALING JAYA: Former Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Mokhtar Hashim passed away at the age of 68 early this morning.

The former Tampin Member of Parliament was said to have died at 3.10am at a hospital in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

His death was confirmed by his wife and children through a Whatsapp message, Sinar Harian reported today.

Mokhtar shocked the country with the killing of the Speaker of the Negeri Sembilan Legislative Assembly, Datuk Mohamad Taha Talib.

On March 6, 1983, he was sentenced to death by the Kuala Lumpur High Court after being found guilty of the offence.

However, the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he was released on July 10, 1991 after receiving a royal pardon.
