389 candidates lose deposits in Sabah state election

PIS president among 389 candidates who lost deposits in Sabah polls after failing to secure one-eighth of votes in their constituencies.

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Impian Sabah (PIS) president Michel Alok @ Ilok is among 389 candidates who lost their deposits in the Sabah State Election.

Candidates forfeit their RM5,000 deposits if they fail to secure at least one-eighth of the total votes in their constituency.

Michel secured only 291 votes in the Telupid seat, losing to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah’s Datuk Jonnybone Kurum who obtained 3,868 votes.

Parti Rumpun Sabah president Datuk Dr Ismail Idris also lost his deposit after receiving just 41 votes in the Sebatik constituency.

Former tourism minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, contesting as an Independent in Segama, lost his deposit with 1,644 votes against Warisan’s Muhammad Abdul Karim who won with 7,325 votes.

PIS recorded the highest number of deposit losses with 72 candidates, followed by Independent candidates (60).

Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku and Perikatan Nasional each had 36 candidates lose deposits.

Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat saw 30 deposit losses, Warisan (23), United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (15), Barisan Nasional (12) and Pakatan Harapan (2).

The Tulid seat recorded the highest number of deposit losses with 11 candidates failing to reach the threshold in its 14-cornered contest.
