Kuching woman loses RM91,000 in Telegram investment scam

A 35-year-old woman in Kuching was cheated of RM91,000 after being lured by a fake investment scheme promising high returns on Telegram.

KUCHING: A 35-year-old woman has lost RM91,000 after falling victim to a fraudulent investment scheme promoted on the Telegram messaging app.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the victim lodged a report on January 11 after being approached by an unknown individual offering a lucrative investment opportunity.

“The victim was instructed to transfer funds to designated accounts,” he said in a statement.

She subsequently made five separate transactions to five different bank accounts, totalling RM91,000.

Alexson said the victim only realised she had been deceived when she was unable to withdraw her initial capital or the promised profits.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
