One suspect arrested as enforcement teams foil attempt to move thousands of litres of petrol out of Kelantan.

KOTA BHARU: Three cars packed with jerrycans of petrol were abandoned on the Sultan Yahya Petra Bridge following a failed smuggling attempt early this morning.

The vehicles contained a total of 3,000 litres of fuel with an estimated value of RM23,800.

Each car was loaded with 40 jerrycans of petrol, according to the Kelantan branch of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).

The discovery was made during an Integrated Operation to Combat the Misappropriation of Controlled Goods.

The operation was conducted by KPDN in collaboration with the Region Three Marine Police Force from Pengkalan Kubor.

State KPDN director Azman Ismail said the operation began at 4.35 am and resulted in the arrest of one local man.

“Authorities instructed the vehicles to stop, but the drivers sped off and made U-turns against traffic to evade arrest,” he said in a statement.

Two other suspects managed to flee the scene during the operation.

The vehicles involved included two Proton Wira Aeroback models and one Proton Gen-2.

One of the Aeroback vehicles stopped on the shoulder of the bridge before the driver fled on foot.

The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for possession of controlled goods with intent to commit an offence. – Bernama
