Malaysia Airlines reroutes Europe flights after Iran airspace closure

Malaysia Airlines flights to London and Paris rerouted via Afghanistan after Iran closed its airspace, with operations now back on schedule.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has confirmed its flights to Europe are operating on schedule following a temporary closure of Iranian airspace.

All Malaysia Airlines passenger flights to London and Paris, as well as cargo operations to Amsterdam, were rerouted via alternative flight paths.

The group said affected flights used established alternatives, including the Afghanistan corridor.

“This routing is a usual and approved alternative and is deployed based on prevailing wind conditions to ensure the most optimal flight route,” MAG told Bernama.

Iran had temporarily closed its airspace to all flights except authorised international civil arrivals and departures, citing security protocols.

The airspace has since reopened after the temporary closure to most flights expired.

A check on flight-tracking website FlightRadar24 showed flights have resumed in and out of Iranian airspace, although traffic remains limited.

The initial notice stated Tehran’s airspace would remain closed until Jan 15, allowing only specific civilian flights with prior approval.

The move comes amid rising regional and domestic tensions, including anti-government protests and international scrutiny.

MAG stated the national carrier would continue to monitor the situation and adhere strictly to international aviation safety standards.

“Safety remains of utmost importance to Malaysia Airlines,” it added. – Bernama
