Malaysia approves natural gas roadmap for energy transition

Government outlines strategies to boost renewable energy and low-carbon growth by 2030.

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Energy Council has approved sustainable strategies outlined in the Natural Gas Roadmap to safeguard national energy security.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the council’s decision following its second meeting of the year.

The approved roadmap will support socioeconomic growth while facilitating Malaysia’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Anwar stated the government’s main focus involves increasing renewable energy’s share in the power generation mix to 35% by 2030.

The strategy also includes expanding open grid access and intensifying investments in green technologies.

These initiatives align with the 13th Malaysia Plan’s objective to strengthen the national energy system.

“The main focus now is to increase the share of renewable energy to 35% by 2030, expand open grid access, and intensify investments in green and new energy technologies,” Anwar posted on the X platform.

He emphasised these measures would create a more innovative, competitive, and inclusive energy system.

The council also agreed on electricity demand and supply projections for data centres based on the Energy Commission’s latest assessment.

Additionally, the meeting approved developing an e-mobility service platform to integrate electric vehicle charging stations nationwide.

This platform will coordinate operations of EV charging infrastructure across Malaysia.

Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, reiterated the MADANI government’s commitment to Malaysia’s energy transition aspirations.

The government aims to position Malaysia as a leader in sustainable and resilient low-carbon economy development.
