75 local authorities achieve Malaysia Smart City 2025 rating

75 Malaysian local authorities earned the Smart City 2025 rating, with one achieving the top Level 3 status and RM14 million allocated for projects

KUALA LUMPUR: Seventy-five local authorities nationwide have achieved the Malaysia Smart City 2025 rating.

Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu announced the recognition is based on the MS ISO 37122:2019 standard.

The rating framework outlines 85 key indicators for sustainable and smart communities.

Seventy authorities received a Level 1 (Smart City Early Adopter) rating as of October.

Four authorities were recognised at Level 2 (Developing Smart City).

One local authority achieved the top Level 3 (Leading Smart City) status.

Aiman Athirah detailed the ministry’s staged targets for higher ratings during a Dewan Rakyat session.

She was responding to a question from Young Syefura Othman regarding targets for top-tier ratings.

The government provides certification and project funding incentives to recognised authorities.

RM5.2 million was channelled to 25 local authorities for smart initiatives in 2024.

RM8.8 million is allocated for 20 authorities’ projects in 2025.

Funded projects include command centres, CCTV systems, and smart traffic lights.

Other eligible initiatives are smart street lighting, bins, poles, and pedestrian crosswalks.

Panic button installations are also supported through the funding programme.

The achievements support the national Smart Nation vision targeted for 2040. – Bernama
