Floods worsen in Pahang as Terengganu and Sarawak see relief

Flooding returns to Pahang with 118 victims in shelters, while conditions improve in Terengganu and Sarawak as relief centres close.

KUANTAN: Continuous heavy rain has caused renewed flooding in Pahang, forcing 118 victims from 31 families into eight temporary relief centres.

The Social Welfare Department reported 52 victims in seven centres in Kuantan and 66 residents in one centre in Maran as of 4.30 pm.

Water levels at the Sungai Belat station in Sri Damai, Kuantan, have exceeded the danger mark, according to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage.

In Terengganu, the flood situation improved significantly by the afternoon.

The number of victims fell to 212 people from 58 families by 5 pm, down from 460 people this morning.

All remaining victims from the Kemaman district are housed in seven relief centres.

Four relief centres in Hulu Terengganu were closed at noon as residents returned home following better weather.

In Sarawak, the flood situation is also improving with only one relief centre still active in Miri.

The State Disaster Management Committee said the relief centre at SK Suai Niah was closed at 11.30 am after affected areas recovered.

The sole remaining centre, managed by the Red Crescent, houses six people from two families affected by a landslide.
