Johor introduces new kuda kepang performance guidelines to ensure the traditional art complies with Islamic law and removes superstitious elements
BATU PAHAT: The launch of the Johor Kuda Kepang Performance Guidelines marks a significant step to regulate the traditional art form and keep it free from superstitious practices.
State Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said the guidelines resulted from a collaborative study by the Johor Mufti Department, the Institute of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia.
He stated the guidelines allow the kuda kepang performance to continue in accordance with Islamic law.
Any practices contravening Islamic law, such as summoning spirits, preparing ritual offerings, or performing rituals causing possession, are strictly prohibited.
“Muslims are urged not to take part in kuda kepang performances that carry superstitious elements,” he said.
This includes organising, performing, watching, supporting, or sharing about them through media.
He made these remarks at a charity event at Sekolah Kebangsaan Peserai.
A Bernama report on September 9 noted the Johor fatwa on kuda kepang has been in place since 2009 but was not gazetted.
The state government preferred an educational approach over punitive enforcement at that time.
Johor Mufti Datuk Yahya Ahmad said the edict was refined in 2013 and strengthened in 2019.
Its formal adoption was delayed to allow public understanding of what cultural expressions Islam permits. – Bernama
