JustGO app hits 200,000 users with ANPR toll system rollout

JustGO Malaysia app launches ANPR-based open toll system on North–South Expressway with no device or upfront costs

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 200,000 users have already downloaded the new JustGO Malaysia app, which features an open toll payment system using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology on the North–South Expressway (NSE).

The ANPR pilot, introduced by Plus Malaysia Bhd (PLUS) in the northern region, covers nine toll plazas between Hutan Kampung and Sungai Dua and commenced in January.

According to JustGO, PLUS has introduced a “lane freedom” concept via the app, allowing registered vehicles to enter and exit any toll lane without adhering to a specific payment method.

“Vehicle number plates will be automatically detected as they pass through toll lanes, with charges processed and linked directly to the user’s preferred payment method in the app. Users simply need to download and register. No device installation or upfront costs are required,” the statement read.

The system was officially launched on Feb 12 by Works Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim during the ministry’s monthly assembly.

Also present were Malaysian Highway Authority deputy director-general (Operations) Mohd Hadzmir Yusoff and PLUS managing director Datuk Nik Airina Nik Jaffar.

Earlier reports highlighted that the ANPR-based system, supported by artificial intelligence and machine learning, can identify vehicles under varying weather conditions, speeds, and angles, ensuring smoother traffic flow.

To use the service, motorists only need to download the JustGO Malaysia app and link a debit or credit card, with no upfront costs.

The app serves as an open digital payment platform aimed at promoting industry-wide adoption, aligning with the government’s push for flexible payment methods.

JustGO activation counters have been established at several locations in Penang and Kedah, including Gurun and Juru rest and service (R&R) areas, to assist users with registration and provide further information.
