Kedah wildlife officials investigate alleged tiger sighting in Kulim

Perhilitan is investigating a villager’s claim of spotting a tiger near Kulim, but found no clear signs during an initial search of the area

KULIM: The Kedah Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) is investigating a reported tiger sighting in Kampung Selarong Panjang, Mahang.

Director Dr Abdul Malek Mohd Yusof said he and four members of the Malayan Tiger Conservation Unit located a villager who made the claim.

The complainant stated he saw the tiger from his vehicle around 2.30 am along Jalan Kampung Selarong-Mahang.

“We could find no signs of the tiger’s presence in the area when we conducted our investigation,” Abdul Malek said.

He did not rule out the possibility, citing a faded paw print found near the alleged sighting location.

The conservation unit will continue monitoring the area, which is surrounded by rubber and oil palm plantations and orchards.

Residents have been advised to notify Perhilitan immediately if they see the animal again.

The location is six kilometres from the Ulu Paip Forest Reserve and 22 kilometres from the Gunong Inas Permanent Forest Reserve. – Bernama
