Minister Nga says unlicensed houses of worship can be legalised if they comply with planning laws and public safety rules
IPOH: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government is prepared to facilitate the legalisation of houses of worship constructed without proper permits.
Minister Nga Kor Ming stated that while land matters fall under state jurisdiction, his ministry is ready to cooperate with all parties to resolve such issues amicably.
He highlighted the role of the ministry’s Non-Islamic Houses of Worship Division in assisting with this process.
“The law is very clear. They must obtain the planning permit, and this regulation is meant for all houses of worship, including mosques, churches and temples, with no exceptions,” Nga said.
He acknowledged that some places of worship were built centuries before modern planning laws existed.
Nga emphasised the need to find solutions for these historical structures through a legislative process.
He added that the key considerations are that such buildings do not disrupt public order, encroach on river reserves, or obstruct traffic.
The minister’s comments follow a statement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar stressed that the government does not support the construction of any house of worship that fails to comply with regulations, regardless of race.
The prime minister said compliance is essential to preserve national harmony and unity.
