Malaysian chess prodigy wins Asian School Chess Championship 2025

Genivan Genkeswaran, 16, clinches first place at the 19th Asian Schools Chess Championships in Mongolia, earning the FIDE Master title.

KUALA LUMPUR: Young Malaysian chess prodigy Genivan Genkeswaran, aged 16, has become the champion at the 19th Asian School Chess Championships 2025.

The competition concluded recently in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Genivan secured first place in the Under-17 Open category, outperforming participants from 16 different countries.

Competing nations included Australia, China, Russia, India, Indonesia, Korea, Singapore, and Vietnam.

His remarkable victory earned him the prestigious FIDE Master title directly from the International Chess Federation.

FIDE regulations award this direct title to gold medalists in the U13, U15, and U17 categories.

Genivan previously held the Candidate Master title, marking this as a significant step forward in his international chess career.

Chess Master Journey’s manager Selvi Shanmugam stated the FIDE Master title will drive Genivan forward with confidence towards his dreams.

Selvi, who is also a Chess Trainer and FIDE Arbiter, hopes for his continuous growth as both a chess player and a positive societal contributor.

This win highlights Malaysia’s emerging strength in the chess arena internationally.

It also adds to the nation’s growing list of achievements in youth mind sports on the global stage.

The championship was organised by the Mongolia Chess Federation under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE.

It gathered top youth players across Asia for nine intense rounds of Standard play from October 24 to November 2.

The 19th edition featured categories from Under-7 to Under-17 for both Boys and Girls.
