Mindef adopts King’s reminder as principle to prevent graft

The Defence Ministry pledges to use the King’s reminder as a guiding principle to prevent recurring corruption and abuse of power in the armed forces.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) will adopt the King’s Royal Address as its main guiding principle to prevent recurring incidents of abuse of power and corruption within the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the firm reminder from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim is taken seriously to safeguard the integrity of the nation’s security forces.

“We humbly uphold and appreciate the Royal Address and the reminder,” he said at a press conference after a housing project handover ceremony.

Khaled Nordin stated that the ministry will ensure this principle guides them so past misconduct issues do not happen again.

He referenced his own New Year address, where he outlined eight perspectives and action approaches to completely prevent leakages and abuse of power.

In his address, the King had expressed disappointment over corruption cases within the ATM, including at the highest levels.

Last Thursday, 23 individuals were detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in connection with the probe.

The arrests included two senior officers and four high-ranking ATM officers linked to procurement issues and the misuse of public funds.
