MP calls for dedicated ministry to tackle urban poverty

An MP proposes a special ministry to address urban poverty’s root causes, as other lawmakers highlight the sandwich generation and digital crime.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Member of Parliament has proposed the establishment of a dedicated ministry or central agency to comprehensively address urban poverty.

Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said a specific focus is needed to tackle root causes, rather than just symptoms. He argued that rapid development has trapped certain societal groups in urban poverty as localities become municipalities.

“The country is developing so rapidly…many localities have become municipalities, and this pace has trapped some groups of society in urban poverty,” he said during the Dewan Rakyat sitting.

He stated the issue has complex layers affecting malnutrition, child development, and education. Amirudin called for a joint plan involving federal, state, and local authorities.

In the same debate, Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa urged a refined method for evaluating economic assistance. She highlighted the financial pressure on the ‘sandwich generation’ caring for both children and elderly parents.

“This is not only economic but also affects mental health, workforce productivity, and in the long run will impact the country’s resilience,” she said.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin suggested all government policies include clear entrepreneurship and education development components.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali urged enhanced AI tracking to combat digital crime. He cited 67,735 digital crime cases with losses of RM2.7 billion.

“Digital fraud now exploits AI through image and video impersonation to manipulate victims,” he said.

He proposed strengthening the Online Safety Act 2025 and boosting cooperation with social media platforms.
