Sabah tourism jetties need urgent repairs for tourist safety, says minister

Kota Kinabalu tourism jetties require immediate maintenance to ensure visitor safety and comfort, with staff quarters also found in poor condition

KOTA KINABALU: Tourism jetties in Kota Kinabalu require immediate maintenance to ensure the comfort and safety of visitors to Sabah.

State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said several facilities and infrastructure at the jetties need urgent attention.

“This situation cannot be left alone as it involves the safety and well-being of officers and staff tasked with protecting tourism conservation sites,” he said.

Jafry stressed that the issue is a matter of safety requiring immediate action.

He noted that staff stationed on islands require safe and conducive accommodation.

The minister visited Jesselton Point, The Sabah Parks Jetty, and the Suria Capital-owned South Jetty earlier today.

The South Jetty is currently under construction at an estimated cost of RM20 million.

Jafry also inspected conditions on Pulau Sulug, including Sabah Parks staff quarters.

He found the staff quarters to be dilapidated, damaged, and in need of immediate repairs.

“This matter will be looked into immediately with the ministry for follow up action and long term solutions,” he added.

Jafry said the ministry will continue to monitor and improve tourism facilities across the state.

This ongoing effort aims to ensure Sabah remains a major tourist destination for the country. – Bernama
