Singapore welcomes Malaysia’s approval for consulates in Sabah and Sarawak

Singapore PM Lawrence Wong hails Malaysia’s formal approval for new consulates in Sabah and Sarawak to boost bilateral ties and consular services

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has welcomed Malaysia’s formal approval for Singapore to establish consulates in Sabah and Sarawak.

He described the decision as an important step in strengthening ties between the peoples of the two nations.

“Happy that Malaysia has formally agreed to Singapore’s proposal to open consulates in Sabah and Sarawak,” Wong said during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“This will allow Singapore to provide consular services to Singaporeans there, deepen the already robust ties between our peoples.”

The matter was first discussed at the leaders’ retreat in Putrajaya last January.

Singapore currently operates two diplomatic missions in Malaysia, its High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and a consulate in Johor Bahru.

The Johor Bahru consulate began operations in 2009. – Bernama
