Teen drowns trying to save friend in Sungai Sedim river

A 16-year-old boy drowned in Sungai Sedim after attempting to rescue a friend who was struggling in the water.

KULIM: A 16-year-old boy drowned on Monday (January 12) afternoon while trying to save a friend in Sungai Sedim.

The incident occurred in Kampung Baru Jemerli, where the victim, Muhammad Haziq Danish Mohd Hafizul Khairi, was at the river with five friends.

Kulim district police chief Supt Zulkifli Azizan said one of the friends began to drown.

“The victim tried to save his friend who was drowning,” he said in a statement.

“His friend managed to hold on to a branch of a nearby tree, but the victim was swept away by currents.”

The victim’s friends sought help from villagers at the location.

Zulkifli said the victim was found trapped in a tree stump about 50 metres from the bathing spot.

Villagers retrieved the body and contacted emergency services.

Firefighters and police arrived at 5 pm and attempted to assist the victim.

Medical officers pronounced him dead at 5.20 pm.

Police investigations found no suspicious elements linked to the incident.

The body was taken to Kulim Hospital for a post-mortem. – Bernama
