Prosecution to continue appeal against Syed Saddiq’s acquittal

The Attorney General has directed prosecutors to proceed with their appeal to the Federal Court against Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s acquittal.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has directed the prosecution to proceed with its appeal against the acquittal of Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

The AGC confirmed the instruction in a letter submitted to the Federal Court deputy registrar today.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin stated the Attorney General, Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, instructed that the appeal be continued.

“The Attorney General has instructed that the appeal be continued and that any decision of the court be accepted,” the letter read.

Wan Shaharuddin said the prosecution maintains its previously submitted written and oral arguments.

“We leave it to the discretion of the panel of judges of the Federal Court to make a decision,” he added.

On 12 December, the Federal Court granted the prosecution a one-week ‘cooling-off’ period to review its appeal.

Court of Appeal President Datuk Abu Bakar Jais, leading the panel, said the prosecution must formally declare its position.

Syed Saddiq was acquitted by the Court of Appeal on 25 June, overturning his High Court conviction and sentence.

The High Court had sentenced him to seven years in prison, two strokes of the cane, and a RM10 million fine.

The charges involved criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property, and money laundering linked to Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada) funds.
