Selangor will take action against all illegal settlements, including demolition, irrespective of occupants’ nationality, says the Menteri Besar.

KUALA SELANGOR: The Selangor government will take action against all illegal settlements in the state, including demolition, regardless of the occupants’ nationality, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said.

He said enforcement measures are not based on sentiment or nationality but on land administration requirements, land-use conditions and compliance with local authority regulations.

“This issue is not about whether it involves Rohingya, Indonesians, Vietnamese, Nepalese or any other group.

“It is about administration and management, land approvals, land use and local authority approvals,” he told reporters after launching the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) 1 Plant Operations in Jeram here today.

Amirudin said the state government had issued notices and warnings to those involved before taking any enforcement action, adding that most cases involved breaches of land-use conditions or developments exceeding approved limits.

However, he said the state government must adhere to legal procedures, including giving landowners sufficient time to rectify breaches before stricter measures such as land forfeiture are imposed.

“The land forfeiture process is not a simple matter, so due legal procedures must be followed. However, I have received assurance from the District Officer that prompt action will be taken to demolish the illegal structures.

“The state government will continue to support and assist enforcement operations, including providing logistics such as trucks through local authorities to remove belongings or relocate the foreigners involved,” he said.

Amirudin said issues involving undocumented migrants fall under the jurisdiction of the Immigration Department and the Home Ministry, while the state government and local authorities stand ready to assist in terms of logistics as well as enforcement related to municipal regulations and land use.

Last Wednesday, Amirudin said various government agencies had been taking action since 2016 to address issues involving buildings occupied by the Rohingya community in Kampung Baru Sungai Makau, Hulu Langat, which recently went viral on social media.

On the same day, the Hulu Langat District and Land Office said demolition of the multi-storey residential building would be carried out in accordance with existing laws.
