Teenage boy missing, feared drowned in Sungai Ulu Sat river

A 13-year-old boy is missing and feared drowned in Sungai Ulu Sat after reportedly jumping in to save his brother the previous day.

KOTA BHARU: A 13-year-old boy is missing and feared to have drowned after going missing while bathing in Sungai Ulu Sat this afternoon.

The Machang Fire and Rescue Station received a distress call about the incident at 4.33 pm.

Station chief Ahmad Alfarra Mohamad Zain said a search operation began immediately upon arrival less than 30 minutes later.

Personnel searched the water’s surface along a one-kilometre stretch of the river.

Operations were suspended at 7.47 pm and are scheduled to resume tomorrow around 8 am.

Machang district police chief Supt Ahmad Shafiki Hussin provided further details on the sequence of events.

He stated the teenage boy had jumped into Sungai Sawa in Kampung Belukar yesterday to help save his 15-year-old brother who had fallen in.

“His brother managed to save himself by hanging on to the side of a wall but the victim was believed to have been swept away by currents,” Ahmad Shafiki said.

He confirmed there has been no sign of the victim during the search thus far.

The police chief urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the nearest police station.
