Man in his 30s arrested in Sungai Petani after pointing gun at elderly neighbour and kicking gate
PETALING JAYA: Police have apprehended an unemployed man following an early-morning disturbance in which he allegedly threatened an elderly neighbour with a firearm at a residential area in Sungai Petani.
The incident occurred at approximately 8am today at Bandar Laguna Merbok, where the suspect in his 30s is accused of verbally abusing a woman and brandishing a weapon before damaging her property.
According to New Straits Times, Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan confirmed the arrest took place after the victim lodged a report at 8.45am.
Officers proceeded to the suspect’s residence where they discovered a firearm along with ammunition in his possession, Hanyan stated during a media briefing at the scene.
Investigators are now working to establish whether the weapon was legally owned or obtained through illicit channels, he added.
Authorities are examining the case under two pieces of legislation: the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.
The dual investigation suggests potential drug-related offences alongside the firearms violations.
The complainant, a woman in her 70s, revealed this was not an isolated incident. She claims the suspect has harassed her repeatedly over an extended period.
According to her account, the situation escalated this morning when the man pointed the firearm directly at her and proceeded to kick her front gate aggressively.
“He has been doing this for years. Today, I could not tolerate it anymore when he pointed the gun at me and kicked my gate, so I lodged a report,” she explained.
The elderly woman expressed confusion about why she has been targeted, stating she doesn’t understand the motivation behind the suspect’s hostile behaviour toward her.
Initially, the victim had hoped the firearm might be a replica or toy. However, she expressed shock upon learning from police that the seized weapon was genuine.
