14 arrested after flag protest at Iran’s London embassy

Police arrest 14 people, including a protester who removed a flag at Iran’s London embassy, with four officers injured during the incident.

LONDON: A protester who removed a flag from Iran’s embassy in London remains in custody as police announced 14 arrests in total.

The man was detained on suspicion of criminal damage, trespass on diplomatic property and assaulting police.

London’s Metropolitan Police said a further 13 people were arrested for offences including violent disorder, assault of an emergency worker, criminal damage and trespass.

Four police officers sustained minor injuries during the incident on Friday.

Police had deployed additional officers last week to prevent disorder and protect the embassy.

This followed an incident on Saturday last week where a protester briefly replaced the embassy’s flag with a pre-1979 revolutionary flag.

Iran has recently witnessed its largest demonstrations in years, challenging the country’s theocratic system.

The protests, which monitors say killed thousands, began with economic grievances in late December.

They escalated into a mass movement demanding the removal of the clerical system that has ruled since the 1979 revolution.
