Conservationists honour Jane Goodall in Washington memorial service

Leonardo DiCaprio and Indigenous leaders pay tribute to primatologist Jane Goodall at Washington National Cathedral service, celebrating her conservation legacy

WASHINGTON: Environmental conservationists gathered at the Washington National Cathedral to honour the late primatologist Jane Goodall.

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio joined Indigenous community representatives in paying heartfelt tribute to the celebrated scientist.

Goodall passed away in October at age 91 after transforming chimpanzee research and becoming a globally revered wildlife advocate.

“May we all honor her by carrying forward that same fierce belief that we can do better,” DiCaprio said during his remarks.

The Hollywood star described his late friend as clear-eyed and blunt about human greed and consumption.

“But beneath that fierce honesty was an unwavering faith that every voice matters,” he added.

Family members and close associates attended the ceremony for the British environmental activist, who died in Los Angeles during a speaking tour.

Navajo Nation member DeWayne “Dee” Crank said Goodall’s advocacy reflected harmony with Navajo beliefs.

Her work stands as “a reminder that humanity’s strength lies in its respect for all living things,” Crank noted.

Some attendees carried plush chimpanzees in recognition of Goodall’s groundbreaking research.

Therapy dogs greeted visitors at the cathedral entrance, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to advance chimpanzee research and conservation efforts.

She launched Roots & Shoots in 1991, a youth environmental program now operating in over 60 countries.

The primatologist authored dozens of books and appeared in numerous documentaries throughout her career.

Her honours included being made a Dame Commander by Britain and receiving the US Presidential Medal of Freedom.

“She constantly reminded us that life was full of wonders,” her grandson Merlin van Lawick said during his eulogy.

“We promise to carry forth your light,” he concluded emotionally. – AFP
