France to reject Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ invitation, source says

France will not join Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’, citing concerns it undermines the UN’s role and extends beyond Gaza, a source close to Macron says.

PARIS: France will not accept an invitation to join US President Donald Trump’s proposed “Board of Peace”, a source close to President Emmanuel Macron said.

The source stated France “does not intend to answer favourably” to the invitation, which was issued on Monday.

The board was initially conceived to oversee the reconstruction of war-torn Gaza.

Its charter, however, does not appear to limit its role solely to the occupied Palestinian territory.

The source said the charter “goes beyond the sole framework of Gaza”.

“It raises major questions, particularly regarding respect for the principles and structure of the United Nations, which under no circumstances can be called into question,” they added.

France is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Earlier on Monday, the French foreign ministry reiterated the country’s commitment to the UN framework.

“This remains the keystone of effective multilateralism, where international law, the sovereign equality of states, and the peaceful settlement of disputes prevail over arbitrariness, power politics and war,” it said.

The ministry added it was reviewing the board’s proposed legal framework with partners.

It expressed concern that the “project extends beyond the situation in Gaza”.

The source close to Macron emphasised that France “remains fully committed to a ceasefire in Gaza and to a credible political horizon for Palestinians and Israelis”.
