Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian man in Odala during clashes after Friday prayers, the Palestinian health ministry and military confirm.
NABLUS: Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian man in the northern occupied West Bank on Friday.
The Palestinian health ministry identified the man as 38-year-old Bahaa Abdel-Rahman Rashid.
It stated he was killed by Israeli fire in the town of Odala, south of Nablus.
Earlier, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported treating a man with a critical head injury from clashes in Odala.
The Israeli military confirmed soldiers opened fire and hit one person during a “violent confrontation”.
It said troops were operating in Odala when “terrorists hurled rocks” in their direction.
Witness Muhammad al-Kharouf told AFP Israeli forces were patrolling and threw tear gas at men leaving Friday prayers.
He said Rashid was killed by live fire in the ensuing clashes.
The military stated it had just completed a two-week counter-terrorism operation in the northern West Bank.
It said that operation resulted in the deaths of six militants and the questioning of dozens of suspects.
A military spokesperson told AFP that Rashid was not among those six militants.
Dozens of men gathered at Nablus’ Rafidia hospital to bid farewell to Rashid.
Violence in the West Bank has surged since the Gaza war began in October 2023.
Israeli troops or settlers have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians in the territory since then.
Many of those killed were militants, but scores were civilians, according to Palestinian health ministry figures.
At least 44 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks or military operations in the same period.
