WASHINGTON: Australia's Alex de Minaur rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over American Jenson Brooksby on Sunday to add a second ATP Atlanta title to the one he captured back in 2019.
The 23-year-old Aussie claimed his sixth career title -- and his first since a victory in Eastbourne in June of last year.
“I’d like to thank the crowd,“ De Minaur said. “I’m not a local, but you guys sure made me feel like one, so really appreciate the support.”
De Minaur had rallied from a set down in each of his previous victories, against Adrian Mannarino in the quarter-finals and Ilya Ivashka in the semis.
But once he'd fought of two break points in his second service game against Brooksby, De Minaur appeared in control throughout.
He saved four of the five break points he faced and converted all four of his break opportunities.
Brooksby erased an early break in the second set, but in the face of de Minaur's determined defense he couldn't find a way to get ahead and remains in search of a first ATP title. - AFP
